What You Can Expect:
Need help telling your story? Janet helps you turn memories into meaningful narratives.
It started when she was a child. Her family was ostracized from their small town community, but no one ever talked about why. As a teenager, a sneak-date introduced her to a man twelve years older than her. Eventually, they told people they were married. They had two kids before Bernice was twenty years old. She did her best to conform to the traditional role of mother and housewife. She became a member of the church and community. But in contrast to some 1950s housewives, she was forced to be self-reliant.
For more than a decade she worked as a nurse at the Colorado State Hospital for the insane, dealing with the unimaginable, an abusive husband, and near-death. She tried again and again to escape and save her children. But there was something around every corner, and it was never what she expected. Her story unfolds without an ounce of pity or regret. Aided by support from her family and powered by the tenacious spirit that guided her, she kept going, no matter what.
“Bernice: A Fiery Story of Love and Family is a gripping account of survival and strength. But even deeper than its testament to endurance is its testament to love. Bernice’s loyalty and love of her family shines through each page. She is a woman of honesty and strong character, but more importantly, one of great humor and a pure heart. Beautifully told by her daughter, Janet Thomas, Bernice is an inspiration to us all.”

"Bernice: A Fiery Story of Love and Family: In Her Daugher's Pen" is more than a mother's life story, authored by her daughter's hand; it is a story that depicts triumph over several tragedies.
While reading this biography, Bernice's voice shines through - akin to having a fireside chat with an older relative. Beginning with Bernice's parents, the book provides not only Bernice's familial background but a history lesson detailing how things were done back in the day. Bernice's parents, through hard work and discipline, raised twelve children - each following their own path. Some of the siblings' lives influenced and had a major impact on Bernice; the sorrow and the joys are given equal weight.
As Bernice shifts from young girl to young wife and mother, she consistently tells the reader that while her choices may not be what society or even you, the reader, feel were right - they were the choices she made. Surviving an abusive marriage and working hard to provide a loving home for her children, Bernice wins at the end despite all the odds being stacked against her.
This book also reveals the many hardships of being a woman in Bernice's time; we take for granted the strides made in the last century-and-a-half and her steely determination; love for her children; and passion for fairness bleeds through the pages. This book is an excellent read for leisure and historical reading. At times, it is gut-punch-wrenching; at other times, it makes you remember your childhood and all the good and bad it may have entailed.

"Bernice can take whatever life dishes out, but when she's had enough, watch out! She escapes an abusive marriage with children in tow, and even has to break the law to get them to safety. I loved the matter of fact way that Bernice tells her story, without an ounce of self pity or regret. She educates herself, fights for her rights and defies the court, all in a time when culture didn't expect women to achieve such things. A true heroine!"

"I found I really did not like Bernice. This book is like watching a train wreck, terrible to watch but hard to look away. This is the real raw deal, life unscripted. When I got to the part about the Titanic picture I was through with the story, sad, and not liking the characters much I finished it. Arduously scraping dead skin off my feet would be more fun. I pray for her kids."

"As Ellis' first Son, I remember my Aunt Bernice very fondly. Although it has been over 20 years since I have been to Colorado I could see her mom and dad's house as if it was only yesterday when she described it. I learned a few things I didn't know about my grandparents and my aunts and uncles."

"This is a beautiful story about a remarkable woman and her love of family. Bernice endures and survives. She doesn't give up, even when everything is piling on top of her. She is a strong, quiet woman with a passion for life.
I was with her from the first line, hooked and enthralled. If you are looking for a heartfelt story that grounds you in life about what a real woman endured, this story is for you."

"Definitely Buy and Start Reading Immediately !!! Such an enthralling read and a page turner. It takes you into an emotional rollercoaster and you can't wait to flip the pages. It s not just the hardship and but the inner strength in the characters. Just the way it was poetically written it makes you feel the emotion's as though you are not just reading a story or watching a movie but like you are a character in the story. I came across this book and was immediately interested just based the summary, but this book pulls you in quickly. It makes you reflect and truly feel emotions. This book is such a hidden gem, highly highly suggest reading. I am so glad I found this and I hope the author continue s on. I will be the first person to get anything else that she comes out with."

"In Bernice a mother's voice and a daughter's writing join to bring the reader a "fiery story of love and family." The book chronicles a mother's survival and escape from an abusive home life. Bernice, the mother, defies the law to take her children to a safer place. At times she falls victim to her own naivete and sympathy for others, but never falls short of loving, defending, and providing for her children. Bernice displays a grit that can inspire others to do what they need to do.

"Indeed a fiery story! I've marveled in the pages of this book since chapter one. Not only is it a fascinating and real look into life before our generation, but the tale of a fascinating woman who can truly say she LIVED. It’s exciting, and at times overwhelming at just how much a person can survive. Nothing less than inspiring and extraordinary. I couldn't put it down!"
